Final Schedule for Superheroes Anonymous 4

Posted by Zetaman Of Portland On August - 24 - 2010

Superheroes Anonymous 4 will be held in Portland, Oregon. Here is the schedule. For more information or RSVP, contact Zetaman at signup@saportland.info.

Press Release

PORTLAND, OR – ZetamanTV, the locally produced reality web series that chronicles the crime fighting, comic book drawing and fundraising adventures of Portland’s real-life superhero Zetaman and his superhero-posse, is set to shoot new episodes at the 4th annual Superheroes Anonymous (SA4) convention in Portland. The event, which runs September 17-19, provides a rare opportunity for real-life superheroes (RLSH) from around the world to meet, attend workshops, and discuss the state of the community.

Please see www.zetaman.tv

Zetaman was selected by his RLSH peers to host this year’s Superheroes Anonymous, a responsibility that he takes as seriously as his costumed activism. “I was blown away and humbled when they selected me,” admits Zetaman. “Most RLSH only know each other through online chats and pictures. This could be the only chance they ever get to meet each other in-person.”

ZetamanTV producer Allan Luebke plans to roll cameras on the entire three-day event. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Luebke says excitedly. “ZetamanTV’s core fan base is the real-life superhero community. Because of ZetamanTV partnering with SA4, those same heroes now have the opportunity to appearance in the show.”

Luebke plans to take advantage of the weeks leading up to SA4 by premiering a new episode and new outtake every Wednesday starting August 11 and culminating September 17, the first day of SA4. The strategy has been a big hit. The first new episode, which shows Zetaman and superhero teammate Antiman painting their new body armor, received record-setting views in the first day.

Costume Workshop Recap!

Posted by ben On August - 3 - 2010

Hello superheroes!

This past Thursday we held our 2nd costume workshop at the inimitable  Spacecraft Brooklyn, and it was easily our best one yet! Not only did we create awesome new superhero gear and have a great time hanging with others, but we also organized a patrol for that Saturday night to test out our new look and help some folk out.

In case you missed what the Superheroes Anonymous costume workshop is all about, it’s a chance for existing and aspiring Real Life Superheroes to come together to work on their costumes, socialize, and talk about Real Life Superheroism – swapping tips and experiences. Spacecraft Brooklyn makes available sewing machines, any and all the fabric you could think of, sprays, paints, gear, string, and accessories – all so that you can make the most uniquely awesome superhero costume imaginable. Additionally, there’s free beer in case any superheroes get thirsty!

In either case, stay tuned for an announcement on the next costume workshop and if you attended one of our previous events and want to go on patrol, email either ben@superheroesanonymous.com or life@superheroesanonymous.com

And if you can’t wait for the next event, check out some images below!

SA in Flashnews

Posted by ben On July - 6 - 2010

The following article appeared in Flashnews – a mobile news website.

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash – FlashNews) – Even superheroes need a helping hand sometimes.

Cue Superheroes Anonymous, a New York-based support group of caped crusaders who run around the city doing small acts of good like dispensing toiletries to the homeless while dressed in superhero costumes.

Though the group was inspired by Alcoholics Anonymous, co- founder Ben Goldman says their mission is the complete opposite: They actually want to keep their members hooked.

He explains, “AA helps people lose their habit while Superheroes Anonymous is trying to convince people to take up a habit. In this case it’s superheroism. We want to enable bigger acts of good.”

The group even has its own 12-step program which teaches the superhero philosophy while giving practical advice for day-to-day acts of bravery.

Goldman says that although crime bosses aren’t being taken down by the superheroes just yet, they are making small differences to improve their city.

Superheroes Anonymous 4 Update

Posted by Zetaman Of Portland On June - 15 - 2010

We just had our first planning meeting. Individuals interested in attending Superheroes Anonymous 4: Project Portland needs to RSVP as soon as possible. To make a reservation, send an email to signup@saportland.info. We need reservations so that we can budget for the Awards Dinner (September 19) as well as different workshops and hotel group rates.

Superheroes Anonymous is focused on Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure. Registration for this is $30. Please join the SA team at http://race.komenoregon.org/goto/superheroesanonymous. This is a excellent opportunity to raise funds as a community to cancer research. If you are joining in, please do your best to fundraise on your own. Shoot videos, flood forums and blogs, anything anyone can do to raise money on their own would be fantastic. When you do have your donation page set up, please send a link to signup@saportland.info so that we may add it to our links.

The awards ceremony will be held at the Northwest Children’s Theater and School in the board room. This will be a catered dinner however alcohol will not be present.

The Real Life Superhero Project

Posted by life On May - 31 - 2010

Do you recognize a superhero when you look one in the face? Do you think such men and women truly exist? If not, then look. And think again.

Indeed, there is a real subculture of genuine heroes, that bridge the gap between the fantastic and the practical. Anonymous and selfless, they choose every day, to make a difference in the world around them. Whether it be feeding the hungry, comforting the sick, or cleaning up their neighborhoods, they save real lives in very real ways. These are not “kooks in costumes,” as they may seem at first glance. They are, simply put, a radical response… to a radical problem.

So who are these modern day heroes? They are our neighbors, our friends, our family members. They are artists, musicians, athletes, and yes, politicians. Their actions serve as reminders that as most giving today has become reactive—digital and removed, temporarily soothing our guilt and feelings of helplessness—we have blinded ourselves to simple principles and practice of compassion and goodwill.

Photographer Peter Tangen has earned the trust of this loose network, to visually document the genuine power of these individuals—and in the process, reveal the soul behind their endeavor.

At first, The Real Life Superhero Project was conceived as an avenue to shine some light on this new breed of activism and altruism, through a photographic installation to benefit the established organizations the superheroes believe in. But as more people were brought into the wholly volunteer project, largely through Tangen’s infectious enthusiasm, the scope and purpose expanded exponentially.

Now, what began as a gallery exhibit, has come to serve as the launching pad of something far greater—a living, breathing community that inspires people to become the positive forces for change we all can be. To become more active, more involved, more committed, and perhaps, a little super in the process.

The website you have arrived at is your starting point. Look around, learn, absorb and ultimately, act. Here you’ll find continually evolving content, offering fresh insights into the superheroes themselves and opportunities for you to become involved, as well as news about the project and its progress. And hopefully, you will come to realize that it doesn’t take a cape to go out and help someone, just the desire to become an active force in your own life, and see how that can affect others.

Through The Real Life Superhero Project, Tangen asks you, the viewer to embrace the intention of the heroes, to take a moment to discover the morality and conscience behind their actions, and ultimately, make the commitment to making a difference yourself.

Celebrate and honor them. And find the hero in all of us.

Past the Mask on 20/20

Posted by life On May - 31 - 2010

20/20 will be airing a segment featuring Superheroes: individuals with extraordinary abilities and inspirational citizen heroes. Life and DC’s Guardian will be featured as part of the Costumed Activist part of the show. ‘Past the Mask: The Real Life Superhero Project’ will be featured as well. This segment is scheduled to premiere Tuesday night, June 1st.

‘Past the Mask is a photo project by Peter Tangen. This project featured twenty individuals from the Real Life Superhero Subculture who flew down to Los Angeles to take part in this. These RLSH, some who have never met each other, were photographed in late September at a studio in Hollywood, California. ‘Past the Mask: The Real Life Superhero Project’ invites viewers, through photos and accompanying text and videos, into the “outsider world” of the RLSH community. A series of “Sub Culture/Pop Culture” posters are to be released on http://www.reallifesuperheroes.com. The goal of the project is to create a fundraising event in which proceeds benefit a children’s charity.

Peter Tangen, of Peter Tangen Productions, is a world renowned photographer. His works include movie posters for all the major studios.

Peter photographed and produced the movie posters for the Spiderman trilogy as well as Batman Begins, Most recently, his studio recently produced the movie posters for the remake of ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street.’
